Anybody here ever done an all-nighter for an essay, paper, or report?

I know I have; it's practically my lifestyle. If you want to, you can rage about them here whenever you have one due, or reminisce about the times you have stayed up till dawn for one of these things.

Anyway, I decided to post this thread because...
    Spoiler Alert!
I am done. I am finally freaking done, and I am so damn happy.

Of course, I still need to make edits, but for the most part, I'm done. It's likely not the best essay I've written, but I'm just so glad I'm done.
The thing is, I enjoy writing these essays and all; I just really need to get the whole time management thing down, which... I probably never will. So I'm still here at 3 AM, which isn't the latest I've stayed up for an essay, but it's still pretty ridiculously late, given that I'm a procrastinating freak.

English majors, please teach me how to survive, because I know you guys have it a lot tougher.

Aw, in-class essays suck. A good score for an entire class period of frustration is worth it though. Do the parents really help their kids in your class with their essays? My parents have never helped me with essay-writing; then again, English isn't their first language.

Well, I finished my second constitutional paper.

It was nothing to get hung over about, but I did have trouble finding ways to link constitutional principles to lowering the voting age to sixteen, so that took awhile.

I enjoy writing essays too, but I'm too lazy to actually start. I write essays/summaries at night. Mostly between 7:00-11:00.
I once stayed up for an 2 page essay at 2:00 in the morning. That one was our final grade for the semester though. (i got a B)

Were you procrastinating? Two-page essays shouldn't take that long, and are actually pretty minimal from what I've seen. It seems to be too short for me to write anything significant, so I normally expand it into four or five pages, like what I did with my three summer essays due on the first day of school. Of course, it depends on the prompt. What were you writing about? It's good that you got a good grade on it. I still haven't gotten a grade for the essay I posted in the OP.

I have so many writing assignments due today.

I'm just getting started on the last one. It's late start, so I don't have to get to school until 9:21. You'd understand since you're in the same timezone as me.

A book that was 200 pages long. Cause like I said, I do essays at night so it takes me awhile.

I hate writing English papers so naturally this is a topic I am experienced in. ^_^
There have been times that I spend all day/night, the day before a short essay is due working from start to finish.

Last year I had a 12 page research paper due that we had the entire semester to finish. I preeeetty much waited until a week before it was due to really get working on it and finished it last minute for an A. xD

I absolutely ABHORE essays, I always end up either having too many ideas to write about or no idea at all -.- And THEN, I won't know how to start it! I am a perfectionist, so for me, practically every word I write has to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I kinda hate that about me, because I'm also a HUGE procrastinator T.T so naturally, I stay awake almost every night of the WHOLE ENTIRE school week writing perfect little essays and the weekends being lazy (mostly)

Another thing about essays: why do they make us do them??! I NEVER got that, I mean, it's like history, we're never gonna talk about history after we get it done in school, (unless you're pursuing a career in that) just like we are probably never going to write another essay after college, so what's the point??????

    /finished rage

I'll be back with more after I remember more things I hate about essays ^.^

Thank you Turfer510 for the awesome sig! <3

Wow, pro! I can totally empathize. I started working on the essay in the OP at 3 o'clock in the afternoon till 3 o'clock in the morning, so that was practically 12 hours straight of frustration, with a lot of procrastination "breaks" in between. The funny thing is that everybody in my class practically stayed up till dawn to get it done; one girl even skipped her first period so she could have it done by English class, and two people got sick and didn't even show up to school. It was like nerdy essay fever or something.

My teacher posted our essay grades online yesterday, and when people found out, they literally all took out their phones right in front of him to check. Of course, he passed the essays back to us in class, but we were still eager.

    So. Darn. Elated. ♥

The girl next to me got a 200/300 though. I feel pretty bad for her. My teacher warned her beforehand if she proceeded to do it the way she was going to, she would get an F, but she was so stubborn...

Same here. In addition to my procrastination, when I do try to begin an essay, I'm stuck with writer's block. It took me forever to figure out a hook for that essay in the OP. Some people recommend to skip the intro and come back to it later. If I could, I swear I would, but I can't possibly proceed without a thesis, and I just feel so disorganized when I don't start an essay from start to end. As a result, I'm often left with a blank document, with tomorrow coming closer and closer. Yeah, and "tomorrow" is usually the day it's due, seeing as I usually start my sad essays a day before.

I wouldn't say that I'm a perfectionist when it comes to essays, but I would say I come quite close. If I were to have OCD for anything, it'd probably be essays. I don't think that's necessarily a good thing, but it's what gets me my grades.

I think it's just harnessing our ability to convey and prove our points in a well-organized manner, so that it builds on our life skills or something. Other than that, I don't really see where essays come into the life process; unless you're going to become some influential writer, even as an English teacher, all you're going to be doing is assigning those essays. It doesn't really matter to me though. As much as these things kill me, I can't imagine an English class without essays. The love-hate relationship is weird; I can't stand them yet I can't live without them at the same time.

Yup, a bunch of the things we learn in school aren't going to be needed in daily lives. I guess it's just part of the whole "learning to think critically" process.
