Just Friends

Five months ago is when we met,
At school, in German class.
We talked a bit, then we'd sit,
And learn the intriguing language.

We talked some more,
Waited by the door,
Let the crowds pass,
And then we'd walk together.

You made me laugh
And I made you laugh.
I'll admit, you're really fun.
-Late for class! Let's run.

People started wondering,
Because we were so close,
If we became a bundle.
They asked, we both said "No."

Right then I started wondering,
"Could there ever be an 'us'?"
I never dared to ask you,
Afraid of what you might do.

One day during computers,
We talked about the rumors,
About what we said to them,
And about what we did.

You said you ignored them,
I said the same thing.
I know I lied-
Just to save my hide.

The next day I asked again,
"What do you say to them?"
You said, "I say you're just my friend."
I laughed and said, "Same here."

Again, I lied,
I wanted to believe
So very much,
That we could be something.

Now I play those words in my head
Which made my heart feel like lead.
"You're Just my friend."
